UFC 262 results: Edson Barboza stops Burgos in bizarre fashion

It’s better late than never for Edson Barboza inside a sold-out crowd of 17,000 in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. on Saturday, May 15. 

After Barboza landed a right cross, it took about three seconds before Burgos fell backwards into the cage. Barboza pounced on the opportunity and earned the finish.

It marked the end to an active affair. Barboza established his leg kicks early, setting the pace for rounds one and two.

The vacant lightweight championship is on the line as Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler headline UFC 262 in front of 17,000 fans on Saturday, May 15.

The co-main event features another lightweight affair as Tony Ferguson faces Beniel Dariush inside the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Kicking off the main card is a scrap between ranked featherweights, No. 9 Shane Burgos and No. 13 Edson Barboza.

In Burgos’ last outing, he suffered a decision defeat to Josh Emmett at UFC on ESPN 11 last June. It snapped a three-fight win streak for the New York native, including victories over Makwan Amirkhani, Cub Swanson and Kurt Holobaugh.

Burgos was expected to turn around against Hakeem Dawodu at UFC 257 on Jan. 23, but an injury forced Dawodu to pull out. 

Barboza is in search of his second UFC victory at featherweight. He most recently earned a decision nod against Amirkhani at UFC Fight Night 179 last October.

The win snapped a three0fight skid for Barboza. He is 1-1 at featherweight inside the octagon, losing a decision to Dan Ige at UFC on ESPN 8 a year ago.

ROUND 1

Barboza lets his leg kicks go early. Barboza showing a speed advantage right away, lands a right hand. Burgos is taking some damage to his legs early. Barboza mixing up his strikes, going to the body, landing leg kicks. Barboza throws a signature spinning back kick, but gives up his back. Burgos is unable to hold on to Barboza. Burgos tries to establish his jab. Barboza taking some punches. Burgos lands a jab, but countered by a right hand from Barboza. Barboza stuns Burgos with a right hand. Barboza countering, Burgos trying to pressure his opponent. Burgos lands a left as Barboza circles out. It’s the end to a active opening round.
