For the first time since his infamous knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239, Ben Askren made his way back into the UFC Octagon for a matchup against one of the best grapplers in UFC history, Demian Maia. The matchup is a battle of two of the most highly-touted grapplers in MMA, and at least to start, the fight took a while to get to the ground.

Maia would keep the fight on the feet early and threw plenty of strikes at Askren, who worked through Maia’s attack to try and get the advantage in the clinch. It wasn’t until late in the first round that Askren was able to secure the first takedown of the fight and the two engaged in a ground battle for the final minute of the first, with Askren finishing in top position.

After more standing and trading in the second round, Askren would once again land a takedown late in the round, and the two fighters exchanged in great transitions as each worked to finish the fight on the ground, but the bell sounded and the fight headed to the third round.

In the third round Askren would land two takedowns but it was Maia reversing position and using his jiu-jitsu skills to take advantage in transition, and Maia locked in a rear-naked choke that saw Askren submit with a single tap and put “Funky” unconscious for a brief moment.

At the end of UFC Singapore, it was Demian Maia defeating Ben Askren and improving his professional record to 28-9 and is now on a three-fight winning streak.
