Alonzo Menifield brutally KO’s Misha Cirkunov: UFC Vegas 62

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, October 15, 2022, just one week out from UFC 280, for UFC Vegas 62, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a women’s flyweight contest between no. 5 ranked Alexa Grasso (14-3) and no. 6 ranked Viviane Araujo (11-3). Grasso had won her last three-straight bouts since moving up to the 125 lb division, while Araujo was 3-1 over her last four coming into tonight’s main event affair.

This is the third time this bout was put together by matchmakers, as their scheduled pairings for February and August of this year both fell through.

Our co-main of the evening came in the bantamweight division, as Cub Swanson (28-12) made the move down to 135 lbs for the first time to take on surging prospect Jonathan Martinez (16-4).

Opening up the main card tonight was a light-heavyweight affair between Misha Cirkunov (15-8) and Alonzo Menifield (12-3). Cirkunov came into the bout on a three-fight losing skid, but is returning to 205 lbs, while Menifield had gone 3-1 over his last four contests.

Official Result: Alonzo Menifield def. Misha Cirkunov via KO (punches) at 1:28 of round one

These two get right to work with Menifield lunging forward to land heavy punches whilst stuffing Cirkunov’s takedown attempts.

Cirkunov shoots on about five takedowns in the first minute, all of which are stuffed.

Menifield then lands a vicious left hook followed by a right uppercut and some hammerfists to secure the stoppage victory in the first 90 seconds of the fight. Cirkunov was out as soon as that uppercut landed, it was absolutely brutal.

Unfortunate for Cirkunov, he’s now lost his last four straight bouts, while Menifield is now 4-1 in his last five appearances. Out of those four wins, three come via finish, including the last two via first round knockout.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
