Umar Khan Signs With Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions

Umar Khan, a national amateur titlist, has signed with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and intends to turn pro under the promotion.

Khan, who is only 18 years old, has won 28 of his 32 career amateur fights and captured a national championship. He was ready to follow the footsteps of his cousin, Hamzah Sheeraz, who is the WBO European Super Welterweight Champion.

Umar Khan, a super bantamweight, says signing with such a big promotion to start his professional career is a blessing and doesn’t feel real. “It is crazy and almost surreal for me. It is like a dream come true and I have known about it since my birthday in May.”

While the amateur ranks has become a trolling ground for fighters to boost their resume and become Olympic medal contenders, Khan never wanted anything to do with that. He always had his eyes set on the professional ranks.

“I just used the amateurs for experience and it was never my dream to be a star at that level. My heart was set on the pro game.”

Khan was a football (soccer for you uncultured Americans) player at a young age. But his brother went to the boxing gym and Khan just tagged along.

“I started boxing at 13 and I was more of a footballer before that, but the football season was finished and my brother went to the boxing club so I went with him. From that moment, I just fell in love with it.”

Umar Khan picked it up almost immediately and was a natural at boxing. “I don’t want to sound cocky, but I think I had a natural ability for it from day one.”

Umar Khan and The Family Connection

Khan’s cousin, Hamzah, is a world champion under the Queensberry Promotions from Frank Warren. It is his cousin that has Khan excited to compete at a professional level.

“It has been crazy and since I have been coming up I have seen him progress. Seeing him have such success just makes you want to do it yourself and get into his position one day.”

The debut of Khan is still up in the air. When asked what style fans can expect from Khan in his debut, he said, “That is a difficult question,” says Khan. “It depends what day it is because sometimes I box and sometimes I fight. If I have to fight I will but I suppose it is best to avoid it.”

He continues, “Hopefully I will get to show what I can do by the end of November.”
