Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye is being targeted for UFC 238, where Shevchenko will put her flyweight title on the line. The two have gone back-and-forth with each other since they both won at UFC 231. Now, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, that fight is expected to happen in Chicago on June 8.
Eye has had a drastic turnaround since moving down from bantamweight to flyweight. She lost four in a row at bantamweight in the UFC to the likes of Miesha Tate, Julianna Pena, Sara McMann, and Bethe Correia before moving down to flyweight. Since the drop down in weight, Eye has won three in a row. During that stretch, she has wins over Kalindra Faria, Jessica Rose-Clark, and Katlyn Chookagian back in December.
The fight with Chookagian was wildly considered the number one contender fight and the timing worked perfectly given the fact Shevchenko defended her belt on the same card.
Meanwhile, Shevchenko is finally a UFC champion and is looking for her first title defense. She most recently fought Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231 where she had a dominant performance to win the belt. Before that, the 30-year-old had yet another dominant performance by beating Priscilla Cachoeira in her flyweight debut.
Shevchenko has had two dominating performances since moving down to flyweight which is closer to her natural weight. At bantamweight though, she still had success and fought Amanda Nunes for the title twice and lost both times, although the second fight was a split-decision.
UFC 238 is starting to take shape and now has at least one title on the line in Chicago. For now, it isn’t known if this fight will be the main event or serve as the co-main event. All that is known is Jessica Eye is finally getting her desired title shot against Valentina Shevchenko in what should be a great fight.
