Robbie Lawler leaves American Top Team, in search for new home gym

VIDEO: Robbie Lawler gets UFC tribute video ahead of retirement fight at UFC 290

Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will be calling an end to his fighting career at UFC 290 this weekend when he takes on Niko Price, after a professional career that started back in 2001. Lawler got his first run in the UFC back in 2002 but was released in 2004 and did not make his return to the company until 2013.

Shortly after his return to the company, Robbie Lawler would get a crack at UFC welterweight gold when he faced Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 for the vacant title, but would come up short. Just months later however, after defeating Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown, Lawler would face Hendricks once again and this time, he would claim the gold.

Never one to find himself in a boring fight, Robbie Lawler would go on to defend his title twice during his championship tenure and was awarded Fight Of The Night five times during his tenure, including memorable classics against Rory MacDonald in 2014 and Carlos Condit in 2016. Ahead of his matchup against the 33-year old Price, the UFC released a tribute video to Lawler, showcasing some of his most legendary brawls and moments inside the UFC Octagon.

Not all has gone well for Robbie Lawler lately as he has only picked up two wins since losing his belt to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 in 2016. Those two wins came against Donald Cerrone (2017) and Nick Diaz (2021) but he has also slowed down the amount of times he has fought in the past few years as well.

The former champion is undoubtedly a future Hall Of Famer as a fighter, and he already has been inducted into the Fight wing for his legendary war against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 in 2015 when he successfully defended his welterweight title.

Robbie Lawler will step inside the Octagon for the 46th professional fight of his career at UFC 290, and he’ll look to call it a career with 15 wins in the UFC if he is able to defeat Price.
