Video: Volkan Oezdemir drops and submits debutant Bogdan Guskov early at UFC Paris

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us today, September 2, 2023, for UFC Paris, going down live from the Accor Arena in Paris, France.

Headlining the event is a heavyweight bout between a pair of contenders in no. 2 ranked former interim champion Ciryl Gane (11-2) and no. 7 ranked Sergey Spivak (16-3).

Co-headlining the event is a flyweight bout between no. 3 ranked contender Manon Fiorot (10-1) and former two-time UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas (11-5).

Our first feature fight of the evening came at 205 lbs between no. 9 ranked former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir (19-7) and the debuting Bogdan Guskov (14-3). Oezdemir came into the bout having gone 3-3 over his latest six appearances, while Guskov came in on a four-fight win streak, all four wins coming via knockout.

Official Result: Volkan Oezdemir def. Bogdan Guskov via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:46 of round one

Oezdemir opens up the bout with a leg kick before Guskov returns with a barrage of punches. Oezdemir then takes Guskov down momentarily and eats a right hand on his way back up.

The former title challenger then lands a hard left hand that wobbles Guskov before landing another than drops him. Oezdemir secures mount quickly thereafter, reigning down heavy shots and forcing Guskov to give up his back where he’s ultimately submitted.

Volkan Oezdemir improves his streak to two-straight with his first finish in four years today at UFC Paris, picking up just the second submission victory of his entire 26-fight career.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
