Volkan Oezdemir, Nikita Krylov

Volkan Oezdemir injured, out of co-main event fight against Nikita Krylov

UFC Fight Island 6 has lost its co-main event as Volkan Oezdemir vs. Nikita Krylov is off.

RT Sport’s Denis Geyko revealed several fights were canceled but the most notable was Oezdemir-Krylov. The reason for the fight being off was not given, but Oezdemir told MyMMANews that he needs knee surgery and was forced to pull out of the scrap.

Volkan Oezdemir is coming off a knockout loss to Jiri Prochazka at UFC 251. It was the first time he was knocked out cold and the loss snapped his two-fight winning streak. The Swiss native was coming off wins over Aleksandar Rakic and Ilir Latifi after losing three straight to Daniel Cormier for the belt, Anthony Smith and Dominick Reyes.

Nikita Krylov, meanwhile, is coming off a decision win over Johnny Walker at UFC Brasilia in March. In his last four fights, he has gone 2-2 with wins over Walker and Ovince St. Preux and losses to Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira. He also holds notable wins over the likes of Ed Herman, Walt Harris, and Fabio Maldonado among others.

It is no doubt disappointing for both men that the fight is off. Oezdemir was looking to get back into the win column, while for Krylov it was a chance for him to become a top-10 light heavyweight contender.

At this time, it is uncertain if Krylov will remain on the card or if they will look to book him on a card for the near future. For Oezdemir, it is likely he will be out for a couple of months rehabbing his knee following surgery.

UFC Fight Island 6 is now as follows:

Korean Zombie vs. Brian Ortega
Modestas Bukauskas vs. Jimmy Crute
Claudio Silva vs. Muslim Salikhov
Jessica Andrade vs. Katlyn Chookagian
Ciryl Gane vs. Ante Delija
