WBSS Final Boxing Match Postponed Again
COVID-19 has pushed another sporting event back yet again. The last World Boxing Super Series bout between Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos has been postponed for a second time.
The bout was to take place originally on March 21, 2020 in Riga, Latvia. When the virus broke out, Latvian government announced a cancellation of all events. The fight was rescheduled to May 16th. Then on the 7th of April, the Latvian government extended the quarantine to May 12th, which will not give WBSS enough time to put a boxing event together.
Briedis is 26-1 coming into his fight for the WBSS championship and the Muhammad Ali trophy. He fought in the tournament last year and was put out by Oleksandr Usyk, the eventual winner of the entire tournament. Since joining up again, Briedis defeated Krzysztof Glowacki to send him to the championship.
Yuniel Dorticos has also suffered only one loss. He was finished by Murat Gassiev in 2018. Now he looks to become champion and don the Muhammad Ali trophy with a win.
WBSS Season 2
The second season of the WBSS has been wildly successful. The promotion saw the birth of superstar Naoya Inoue as he trailblazed through his tournament and went through an absolute war with Nonito Donaire last November in a fight of the year candidate. Super lightweights were also on display as the UK’s Josh Taylor fought New Orleans native Regis Prograis to a majority decision win in another fight of the year candidate.
The first season was super successful as well and saw the rise of Oleksandr Usyk. After Usyk unified the cruiserweight division, he set his sights on doing the same at heavyweight. The promotion also birthed Callum Smith who has been flirting with a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
While WBSS doesn’t have a date for the last finals match, as soon as it happens you will be told here. Stay posted to My MMA News for all the latest news surrounding the fight. Thanks for reading!
