Who Is Gabriel Varga, Karate Combat’s Newest Signing?
Karate Combat is all the rage these days. The promotion has signed big name commentators and guest appearances for the broadcast with the likes of Bas Rutten, Georges St-Pierre, The Mountain, Lyoto Machida, Danny Trejo and many more. But the most recent signings weren’t guest commentators, it was two of the best karateka in the world: Gabriel Varga and Dastonbek Otabolyaev. Gabriel Varga is an incredible signing with so many accomplishments to his name already. Let’s take some time to go over what the Canadian karateka has done!
Who Is Gabriel Varga?
First, I’d like to list off some accomplishments of Gabriel Varga. He is a fourth degree black belt in Shotokan which set forth the founding principles of the Japan Karate Association. Varga has competed in Muay Thai, kickboxing and mixed martial arts.
Once turning professional, Varga defeated Omar Ahmed early on in his career in 2009. Then in 2011, Varga earned a shot at the World Kickboxing Network World Lightweight Oriental Championship. There, he defeated France’s Yohan Ha Van where he utilized knees and sweeps to take the decision.
Varga then signed to K-1 where he faced three-time Rajadamnern Stadium champion, Lerdsila. He dropped Lerdsila, a Thai boxing legend, with a spinning back fist and won the decision. It was then he signed to glory in 2013 and made his debut at Glory 8 in Tokyo. Varga would go on to win the inaugural Glory Featherweight title at Glory 20 when he defeated Mosab Amrani via decision.
Varga would then move his sights to Bellator Kickboxing where he won the Bellator Kickboxing Featherweight title by first round TKO against Kevin Ross. Unfortunately, he would only get to defend twice as Bellator quit doing kickboxing events.
Varga has wins over some of the best in the world. In addition to Ahmed, Lerdsila, and Amrani earlier, Gabriel Varga has also defeated Shane Oblonsky, Yodkhunpon, Serhiy Adamchuk among others.
Now, Varga sets his sights on Karate Combat and their golden belt. Stay posted to My MMA News for all the latest surrounding Karate Combat Season 4, Gabriel Varga and more!
