Yoel Romero Will Never Fight Jon Jones
“Forget about it.” Those were the words Yoel Romero used to describe a future match up with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Romero, who is set to face Paulo Coasta on Saturday night at the UFC 241 in Anaheim, California, was asked at media day about fighting Jones and the 42 year old wanted nothing to do with it.
“The biggest thing is my relationship with Jonny,” said Romero. “We have a good relationship and that will never happen.”
No matter the circumstances or the amount of money, Romero cannot find himself squaring off against his friend of three years.
“We have the same manager and Jonny called me when he had the fight with Ovince Saint Preux,” said the Cuban. “He asked me if I could help him and I said ‘of course, it would be my pleasure.”
Following that camp Yoel Romero and Jon Jones continued to stay in contact through thick and thin.
“Every time he calls me whether it’s something good or bad we always get along and ask how each others families are,” Romero said.
While Romero doesn’t see fight against Jones in the future, he may have another shot at the middleweight championship. If he can get a win on Saturday and then Robert Whittaker loses to Israel Adesanya in October, Romero will likely the next shot.
Romero has a few chances to claim UFC gold. In 2017, he lost an interim title fight to Robert Whittaker. Then in 2018, he defeated Luke Rockhold in an interim title fight, but could not get the belt because he failed to make weight. Later that year he lost to Whittaker again, but even if he one he could not claim the belt because he once again missed weight.
