Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez will meet at last.
After months of speculation and fans begging for the fight, Magomedshairpov confirmed on his Instagram account that the fight is now official. The featherweight bout will serve as the main event on the UFC’s Aug. 29 card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Magomedsharipov (18-1) is a perfect 6-0 in the UFC has is currently riding a 14-fight winning streak. The Russian is currently ranked No.3 in the official UFC featherweight rankings after earning wins over Calvin Kattar, Jeremy Stephens and Sheymon Moraes.
Magomedsharipov is a fan favorite for his Abraham Lincoln look and his impressive style. Standing over six feet tall and his long reach advantage, many see him as a future superstar.
Rodriguez (13-2, 1NC) has an impressive track record himself. He is 8-1, 1 NC in the UFC. He is also a former winner of The Ultimate Fighter. Rodriguez owns wins over Jeremy Stephens, Chan Sung Jung, BJ Penn, Andre Fili and Dan Hooker. His lone UFC loss comes to Frankie Edgar. The Mexican is currently ranked No. 5 in the UFC featherweight rankings.
Rodriguez’s win over Chan Sung Jung, also known as The Korean Zombie, is one of the craziest knockouts in UFC history. Down on the judges scorecards with five seconds remaining in the fight, Rodriguez landed an elbow that knocked out Zombie as time expired.
While it is not confirmed, it is speculated that the Magomedsharipov vs. Rodriguez fight will be a title elimination fight with the fighting featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski. Earlier this month at UFC 251, Volkanovski defended his belt by coming out on the winning end of a split decision against Max Holloway. Volkanovski has now defeated Holloway twice.
