Alexander Volkanovski open to future Conor McGregor UFC lightweight title fight

UFC featherweight champion and pound-for-pound kingpin Alexander Volkanovski says he is open to a future Conor McGregor lightweight title fight.

This weekend at UFC 284, Volkanovski moves up in weight when he takes on UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in what is a true super fight between the sport’s top two pound-for-pound fighters. On paper, it’s a tough fight for Volkanovski, but he’s confident that he can get the job done. If he does win the fight, he’ll be a double champion, and he’s made it clear that he intends on defending the UFC lightweight belt if he wins it.

Although he hasn’t fought in nearly two years and is not a top-five fighter at the moment, McGregor is still the biggest star in the sport. This fall, he returns to the Octagon when he takes on Michael Chandler after the two men coach the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” If McGregor beats Chandler, it would immediately put him back into title contention at 155lbs, and if Volkanovski is the champion, then he would like to fight him.

Speaking to reporters ahead of UFC 284, Volkanovski admitted that he is open to a future UFC lightweight title fight against McGregor if he beats Chandler later this year in his long-anticipated return to the Octagon.

“That just puts Conor right back in the conversations for the belt and all that type of stuff. For people to say he wouldn’t deserve it and there’s no way they’re going to do that, you’re pretty crazy, right? It’s Conor McGregor, and if he takes out someone like Chandler, you know his name is going to be mentioned. You know people are going to be talking about him,” Volkanovski said (via MMAjunkie.com).

First things first, though, and Volkanovski will need to get past Makhachev this weekend at UFC 284.

Who do you think would win a UFC lightweight title fight between Conor McGregor and Alexander Volkanovski?
