Overeem made the announcement via Twitter, while Sterling appeared on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani to make his announcement.
“The contract was a lot more lucrative than the original offer,” Sterling said. “In terms of the upfront money and the back end money, in terms of becoming the champion, things like that, there was a lot more to offer with those guys.”
Sterling decided to test the market, courting offers from promotions like Bellator and World Series of Fighting, and he believes that choice helped him get the best deal possible.
“I’m 100 percent happy with my decision,” Sterling said. “I think I got a better deal for myself than I would have had.”
The 26-year-old is currently undefeated in the UFC, winning four consecutive fights.
Overeem also announced he will be headlining UFC Rotterdam on May 8.
