Angela Lee open to grappling match against Danielle Kelly

Angela Lee open to grappling match against Danielle Kelly

ONE Championship atomweight champion Angela Lee is arguably one of the most dominant forces in women’s mixed martial arts today.

Having owned the title since 2016, and fresh off a submission victory over one of the world’s best Muay Thai practitioners in Stamp Fairtex, the question comes as to ‘what’s next’ for Angela Lee?  While the bout against Fairtex was under MMA rules, it was also the first fight for Lee since 2019, proving she still has what it takes to be challenged by some of the world’s top athletes.

Also competing on that same ONE: X fight card on March 26 was grappling sensation Danielle Kelly.

Kelly and Mei Yamaguchi grappled to a draw. While she did not get the win, Kelly did earn a $50,000 bonus for her efforts.

In a recent interview with South China Morning Post, Kelly expressed interest in competing in a grappling match against Lee who headlined that fight card.

Kelly said that “it would be cool” to have a grappling match with, arguably, ONE Championship’s most dominant world champion.

Lee, in an interview with the same outlet, responded to Kelly’s challenge.

“I’d love to, you know, I love to grapple, you know. As soon as I turned 18, I was focusing entirely on MMA. But I didn’t get a chance to do a lot of the grappling competitions that I would’ve liked. So I think it would be cool for sure.”

Lee, a black belt herself, has eight submission wins on her record.

Could tis contest be something that ONE Championship books in the near future?
