Anthony Pettis wants Conor McGregor next
Anthony Pettis was looking to join historic company as one of only two others in Conor McGregor and Kenny Florian to win fights in featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight inside the Octagon. Ultimately, Pettis did exactly that as he knocked out Thompson in the second round, and now, he is already eyeing his next fight.
That next fight he wants is against the one and only Conor McGregor.
“That’s a fun fight,” he told MMA Junkie after a stunning knockout of Stephen Thompson (14-4-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) in the headliner of UFC on ESPN+ 6, which took place Saturday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. “(He’s) another guy that I love his style, another guy that’s going to be a fun style to fight.
“If he wants to do it, let’s do it. I’m not afraid to fight anybody.”
However, Pettis knows McGregor has several people calling him out, so if he can’t get that fight, it is no worries to him.
“If it’s not him, then the next guy in line,” he said.
Pettis is now back in the win column after a tough loss against Tony Ferguson at UFC 229, where McGregor also lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov. The two would no doubt put on a fun fight as Pettis and McGregor can throw flashy kicks and punches, and also have the capabilities of knocking out anyone. If Pettis fights McGregor, he would want it at welterweight where neither would have to cut much weight, if any at all.
“We’re both natural, I think, there,” Pettis said. “If it’s not for a title, why cut?”
But Pettis won’t be waiting, rather he just wants to get back in there and fight. Pettis is now in the driver’s seat at welterweight and could very well be a win away from a title shot if he fights another top contender.
