Billy Quarantillo discusses his UFC Nashville win and his underground nickname “Billy the Squid”
Billy Quarantillo loves to fight and over the weekend at UFC Nashville, he found himself in a dog fight and he loved every single moment of it.
Standing across the octagon from Quarantillo last Saturday was Damon Jackson and ahead of the fight, Jackson made it clear that the longer the fight went, he would favor Quarantillo.
Jackson is a skilled fighter and has no problem going the distance, but Quarantillo always gets better as the fight goes on and that’s exactly what happened.
In the opening round, Jackson looked great as he started fast like he wanted to as Quarantillo was unable to read Jackson’s punches and Jackson landed a big takedown as well.
After that, Jackson didn’t fade, but Quarantillo just got tougher and you could say smarter as well.
Between the first and second rounds, Quarantillo came back to the stool and was given a math problem by his head coach.
Turns out thinking about the math problem works a part of your brain that focuses on better decision making and that’s why Quarantillo and his coaches do that.
All theories aside, the fight would continue for another 10 minutes and they were 10 good minutes.
Quarantillo would grind out of some tough spots and land some really hard and heavy punches and he even opened a small cut on Jackson’s head in the final round.
Both the second and third rounds were close and by the time final horn sounded, the fans at UFC Nashville were standing on their feet and cheering the two fighters on.
When the scorecards were announced, it was Quarantillo, who edged out the second and third rounds to win 29-28 on all three of the judges scorecards.
Following the win, Quarantillo spoke with MyMMANews to discuss his win, the close fight, doing math problems in between rounds, his underground nickname “Billy the Squid” and his love for his hometown NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres.
