Bobby Green outpoints Lando Vannata for unanimous decision nod

The UFC returns from “Fight Island” and is back in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight, Saturday, Aug.1.

A middleweight clash between long-time veteran Derek Brunson and the unbeaten Edmen Shabazyan will headline UFC on ESPN+ 31 inside the UFC Apex. In the co-main event, the consensus No. 1 contender of the women’s flyweight division, Joanne Calderwood takes a short notice fight against Jennifer Maia. 

Continuing the action on the main card is a lightweight rematch between Bobby Green and Lando Vannata. The two fought to a split-decision draw at UFC 216 back in 2017. 

Green makes a quick turnaround after beating Clay Guida via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 11 this past June.

His victory ended a two-fight skid for the Strikeforce veteran. 

Vannata is coming off a win of his own, defeating Yancy Medeiros via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN+25 on Feb. 15. Vannata got off to a quick start to 2020 after splitting 2019 at 1-1 inside the octagon.

ROUND 1

Both men come out. Green already showboating early. Green is on the outside. Both men trading, Vannata gets the better of the exchange. Green lands a right hand, but takes a left hook. Green throws a kick, but Vannata is able to grab the leg. Vannata is doing well with countering Green’s offense. Vannata takes a left hand, but lands one of his own. Green lands a big right hand as Vannata comes in. Green is on top of Vannata. Vannata gets up on one foot, but Green is able to return Vannata to the mat against the cage. Vannata able to reverse the position. Green gets off the cage shortly after. Both men landing in the first. Green is talking to Vannata. Green takes a combination, talks and gives one right back. The round ends with both men staying distant.

ROUND 2

Both men rush out again, but Vannata takes center. Green throws a one, two combinations, but Vannata slips under and grabs Green. Green able to get an under hook and escapes. Vannata throws a kick and slips. Green lands a jab and then comes forward. Green puts Vannata against the cage, lands a knee to the body. Vannata’s lead leg showing some damage from Green’s leg kicks. Green blocks a head kick, but eats a left hand. Green gets Vannata down. Vanatta works for a guillotine, but Green escapes quickly. Green is in the guard of Vannata. Vannata stays patient, pushes off Green and stands. Green misses on the jab. Vannata is still center. Vannata lands a right hand. Green misses with jab to the body, but then lands jab to the face. Vannata scores a takedown, but Green works up closely and escapes. Green keeps attacking the lead leg. The second round ends with Vannata landing a upper cut.

Vannata lands a spinning back kick to the body. Vannata is cutting off the distance and stays tight. Green rocks Vannata and goes down. Vannata gets on top and reigns down ground and pound. Green postures up and lands more ground and pound. Green moves to full mount. Vannata give up his back, then drops to attack the ankle of Green. Green able to escape and they are back on their feet. Both men landing. Green lands another takedown and is in the half guard of Vannata. Green waits and takes the back. Vannata escapes the rear-naked choke quickly. Vannata escapes and they are on their feet. Green lands a knee to the body. Vannata lands with a right hand. Green lands front kick to thigh of Vannata. Green lands a jab and slips. The round ends with Green pushing Vannata to the mat.
