Carlos Ulberg, UFC 293

Carlos Ulberg rallies to submit Da Un Jung in final seconds of UFC 293 preliminary main event

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, September 9, 2023, for UFC 293, going down live from the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Headlining the event is a title clash between UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya (24-2) and no. 5 ranked Sean Strickland (27-5).

Co-headlining the event is a heavyweight affair between no. 6 ranked Tai Tuivasa (14-5) and no. 7 ranked former Bellator & M-1 Global heavyweight champion Alexander Volkov (36-10).

Headlining our preliminary card tonight was a light-heavyweight encounter between Carlos Ulberg (9-1) and Da Un Jung (15-5-1). Ulberg, following defeat in his promotional debut, had since gone 4-0 inside the octagon, while following a 4-0-1 start to Jung’s promotional tenure, he’d since lost his last two-straight coming in.

Official Result: Carlos Ulberg def. Da Un Jung via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:49 of round three

Jung controls the center through much of the opening round, each man landing good leg kicks throughout. Jung begins to land his kicks to the lead leg of Ulberg at will before Ulberg catches him with a hard right hand and drops him toward the end of round one.

Jung continues to dictate the pace of the fight through round two, having landed 23 leg kicks in the first ten minutes. It’s surprising really, considering Ulberg is 19-2 in professional kickboxing and he’s getting out-kicked tonight. He did triple up on his jabs a few times toward the end of the second, landing a lot of them.

Ulberg lands a series of nasty knees to the body of Jung in the clinch in the third and final round before he’s taken down momentarily.

Once returning to his feet Ulberg takes Jung down and mounts him in the final minute, reigning down heavy punches from top position. This forces Jung to give up his back, where he is ultimately forced to tap to a rear naked choke in the final seconds of the fight.

This was the first submission victory of Carlos Ulberg’s career, and he just improved his win streak to five-straight inside the octagon tonight at UFC 293.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
