Cody Garbrandt asked Dana White’s permission for flyweight move
Cody Garbrandt could be making his move to the flyweight division after all.
Garbrandt told ESPN he asked UFC President Dana White for permission to drop to 125-pounds and challenge the newly-crowned 125-pound champion, Deiveson Fugueiredo.
The former bantamweight champion likes his chances as a No. 1 contender in the flyweight division.
“As far as I know,” Garbrandt said to ESPN. “I don’t have a contract in hand, I’m waiting on that. … I talked to Dana when he was on Fight Island and he said, ‘I’ll work on it.’ I just got done working out and I weigh 145 pounds. I don’t cut weight to fight at 135. I can be very dangerous [at 125] and at 135.”
If Garbrandt does move to 125 pounds, he could become the seventh UFC fighter to win titles in multiple weight classes.
Garbrandt recently snapped a three-fight losing streak with a first-round walk off-knockout against Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 on June 6. He previously dropped three-straight TKO losses to Pedro Munhoz and back-to-back defeats to T.J. Dillashaw.
Figueiredo recently captured the 125-pound strap by defeating Joseph Benavidez via first-round knockout at UFC on ESPN+ 31 on “Fight Island,” July 18.
At 19-1, Figueiredo is on a four-fight win streak, including three finishes. The Brazilian is 8-1 inside the octagon
Garbrandt could potentially skip the line over current flyweights Brandon Moreno, Alex Perez and Askar Askarov are also in the mix for No. 1 contender spots.
