Colby Covington drops timeline for Kamaru Usman UFC welterweight title rematch
Top-ranked title contender Colby Covington dropped the planned timeline for his rematch against UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
Despite there being a number of title contenders waiting for their crack at the belt at 170lbs, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Covington is next in line to fight Usman for the strap. The two rivals previously met at UFC 245 in December 2019, with Usman winning via fifth-round TKO in a back-and-forth fight. White has said on numerous occasions that the first Usman vs. Covington fight is one of his all-time favorites and the UFC president said Covington is next up.
Speaking to James Lynch, Covington revealed when this rematch with Usman could take place.
“The latest I heard was sometime in October or November. It’s going to happen, there’s no doubt about it. They’re just trying to figure out what pay-per-view to line it up for,” Covington said.
It’s worth noting that Covington has fought just once since that first encounter with Usman, winning via fifth-round TKO over Tyron Woodley last year. As for Usman, since beating Covington he has defeated Jorge Masvidal twice and Gilbert Burns once. However, despite Usman going 3-0 since his first meeting with Covington, “Chaos” has not been impressed.
“They want to give Marty Juiceman a little time. I know he had to find a new chemist after his last fight. He didn’t look too good, he gassed out in there. Everybody’s overshadowing his win because he got this lucky knockout, because he closed his eyes and threw a haymaker and he landed it. But man, he was gassed out, he was swinging for the fence, there was no technique in that fight. If he fights me like that, I promise you I will expose him. He knows that deep down inside. If this was an easy fight Marty would be begging me to fight him. He would be like, ‘let’s fight, let’s fight.’ He knew that Dilbert and Jorge were two lightweights, two easy paychecks that he can get out of the way. Why isn’t he wanting to fight me again? Hmm, maybe because he’s been in there with me and he knows how good I am and knows I will be the one who will dethrone him and take everything he worked for,” Covington said.
