Cory Sandhagen puts Marlon Moraes away with spinning-back kick

A packed UFC on ESPN+37 card will take place on “Fight Island” tonight, Saturday, Oct. 10.

Headlining the 14-bout event is a matchup between top-five ranked bantamweights Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen. 

Moraes won for of his last five octagon appearances. He most recently defeated former featherweight champion Jose Aldo via split decision at UFC 245 in December 2019. His last defeat was a third-round TKO to former bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 238 in June 2019.

Sandhagen is looking to rebound after his first UFC defeat. He lost by first-round submission to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 250 this past June. The defeat snapped a seven-fight win streak, including wins against Raphael Assuncao, John Lineker and Iuri Alcantara.

ROUND 1

Moraes comes center, Sandhagen on the outside. Sandhagen misses the leg kick. Sandhagen throws another leg kick. Moraes misses with a leg kick of his own. Sandhagen eats an overhand right. Moraes lands a leg kick, followed by a right hand. Sandhagen landing a leg kick as well. Moraes eats a jab from Sandhagen. Sandhagen is staying busy with his leg kicks. Moraes misses with another overhand right hand. Sandhagen switching stances, trying to confuse Moraes. Both guys landing early in the first. Sandhagen pops the jab. Moraes lands a leg kick. Sandhagen misses with spinning kick. Moraes counters with a spinning back fist. Moraes lands a right hand. Sandhagen counters nicely, solid footwork too. Sandhagen lands jab, followed by a spinning back fist. Moraes pops the jab. Sandhagen goes to the body with a kick. Sandhagen with high-volume strikes. Moraes lands takedown to end the round on top.

Sandhagen runs to the center, Both men exchange leg kicks. Sandhagen landing the jab early in round two, then lands kick to body, then goes up top. Moraes misses with a right hand. Moraes says his orbital bone is broken. Sandhagen lands a spinning head kick, right on top of Moraes head. Moraes goes down and Sandhagen finishes with ground and pound for the finish.

Official result: Cory Sandhagen def. Marlon Moraes via TKO at 1:03 in round 2.
