Dana White says Marc Goddard ‘did a really really bad job’ reffing Jim Crute vs Sam Alvey
To open the pay-per-view portion of UFC 234, Sam Alvey was taking on the undefeated light heavyweight prospect, Jim Crute.
It was Alvey’s pay-per-view debut, and he was looking to hand Crute the first loss of his professional career. However, that was not the case as Crute caught Alvery that dropped him, in which Crute believe he knocked him out so walked off. Ultimately, the referee Marc Goddard. did not stop the fight. Alvey then got up and had ‘Bambi’ legs so to speak. He was wobbly and then dropped again. Crute then started punching Alvey in which most were getting blocked by his arms and he even gave Goddard a thumbs up. Then, Goddard stopped the fight and Crute won by TKO.
Alvey got up furious with Goddard, as he was yelling at him about the fight being stopped early. To make matter worse, Alvey has had problems with Goddard before with him stopping his fight early. Well, Alvey wasn’t the only one who believes the fight was stopped too early.
“The ref did a really, really bad job,” UFC President Dana White said at the UFC 234 post-fight press conference. “Real poor refereeing in that fight.”
Not only did White think he stopped the fight too early, but he also believes he messed up when Crute first dropped Alvey and walked off.
“The ref screwed that up, too,” White said. “The ref jumped in there, and [Crute] thought the ref was breaking it up.
“When something like that happens, it could have cost Crute the fight, because if Alvey got back up and, you know — and then he goes to stop it too soon, then he stops it too early, in my opinion. It happens sometimes, and you know, it sucks for Sam.”
Ultimately, the loss goes on Alvey’s record, but he still wasn’t happy about. Just before the fight was stopped, he gave Goddard a thumbs up in which Goddard must have not seen. No matter what, White was not happy with Goddard’s officiating,
“I thought it was a bad stoppage,” White said. “A lot of those shots were hitting him on the arm, but he was obviously hurt, but the fight could’ve gone a little longer and we could’ve saw a little bit more of Crute. Bad stoppage in my opinion.”
