Dana White says he would “hate” a potential Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Alvarez boxing match
UFC president Dana White says that he would “hate” a potential fight between Kamaru Usman and Canelo Alvarez in the boxing ring.
Usman defeated Colby Covington at UFC 268 this past November, and ever since then, he has set his sights on a massive payday boxing match against Alvarez, the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. It’s understandable why Usman would want the fight since it would likely make him a lot of money, and Alvarez has admitted he is interested in the payday as well. But as far as White goes, this fight is not going to happen.
Speaking to ESPN in a recent interview, White shared his honest thoughts on Usman vs. Alvarez.
“I hate the Canelo fight. I mean, I don’t even have to explain it to people. Everybody knows. I mean, come on. It’s silly,” White said (h/t MMAjunkie.com).
In general, White is against crossover fights between UFC fighters and boxers. However, White did allow UFC superstar Conor McGregor to fight Floyd Mayweather five years ago in what was an absolutely massive fight. Despite allowing that, White says this Usman vs. Alvarez fight is different and he’s just not interested in it.
“You can’t look at every one of these things like the Conor-Mayweather fight,” White said. “It’s not gonna be like the Conor-Mayweather fight. You go out and put on one of these type of fights, and you don’t sell the way you hope it would sell then believe me, I’m not interested in that. It’s not what I do. We saw it. We know what happens if a boxer comes into the UFC, and we know what happens when UFC fighters go to boxing. Especially when you’re talking about Canelo, who’s one of the best in the world, one of the best of all time. Mayweather, one of the best of all time. It’s just silly.”
Are you like Dana White and hate the Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Alvarez fight, or do you think it makes sense?
