Cain Velasquez

Daniel Cormier knows Cain Velasquez will be heavyweight champion again

Daniel Cormier is the current UFC heavyweight champion. Although that is the division he first entered the UFC at, he moved down to light heavyweight so his friend and training partner, Cain Velasquez could be the heavyweight champion. The two were never going to fight, and Cormier knew the only way to a belt was at light heavyweight, which he ended up doing.

Then, as Velasquez was out with injury, Cormier returned to heavyweight and captured that belt also. Now, Velasquez is set to return against Francis Ngannou on Sunday, where a win could put Velasquez in the title picture or one fight away. Know for sure, Cormier is confident Velasquez will be a champion again.

“You’re going to see vintage, you’re going to see the best,” Cormier said on The MMA Hour. “Nothing has changed. He is still as good, still as fast. He still can wrestle, as well. You have to remember, this whole time off he’s been helping me the whole time.

“He will be the champ, very, very soon. As soon as I’m out of there he will be the champ,” he added. “The only issue with that is, the UFC has to know, now Cain is healthy and they can trust him because he will be around for a while.”

Ultimately, many MMA fans are clamoring for Velasquez to return to the Octagon and count Cormier as one of those. He has seen Velasquez in the gym and knows he is ready to fight and looks good as ever.

“As you’re excited I’m excited,” he said. “And not as a teammate, but as a fan of the sport. Dude is just a buzz saw in there and I can’t wait to watch him where he belongs, in that Octagon. I’m excited he gets another opportunity to put his skill on display again.”

Velasquez can start his journey to the title again with a win over Ngannou on Sunday.
