David Onama submits Garrett Armfield in rematch at UFC Vegas 58

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, July 9, 2022, for UFC Vegas 58, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a pair of ranked lightweights in former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos (no. 7) and multi-time kickboxing world champion Rafael Fiziev (no. 10).

Co-headlining is a middleweight showcase between relative unknown talents Caio Borralho and Armen Petrosyan.

Our feature bout on the preliminary card was a rematch coming in the featherweight division between David Onama and Garrett Armfield. These two fought their last amateur fights opposing one another, with Onama claiming the unanimous decision victory.

Since then, they’ve each had ten professional fights; Onama going 9-1, and Armfield going 8-2. Of Onama’s nine wins, all nine come via finish, while Armfield has finished seven of his eight victories.

Official Result: David Onama def. Garrett Armfield via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:12 of round two

Armfield searches for an early takedown up along the fence, while Onama clamps up a kimura lock and gets the sweep with it. He adjusts it to an armbar, though he’s unable to secure the submission and ends up on his back.

Not long after Onama is back to his feet though, and he’s throwing heavy punches.

Onama’s straight punches are setting up his beautiful hooks, though he did get cracked hard once through the first five minutes.

Armfield comes out in the second in search of a takedown once again, but Onama sprawls and digs his underhooks beautifully each time and ends up taking Armfield’s back.

Once taking his back, Onama transitions to mount, where he passes to side control after wrapping up an arm-triangle choke and secures the second-round finish.

David Onama is now 10-1 as a professional, all ten wins coming via finish with six knockouts and four submissions.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
