Desmond Torres hopes to make childhood dream a reality at DWCS 25
Desmond Torres discusses his upcoming fight with Steve Garcia at Dana White’s Contender Series.
The bantamweight showdown will take place this Tuesday night at DWCS 25, emanating from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada and will stream on ESPN+.
“The Tyrant” discusses training with Garcia in the past, taking the fight on short notice, who he has been working with — a cast of UFC rostered fighters — to get ready for this fight, how his fighting style matches Dana White’s criteria, how he sees the fight playing out and much more.
Torres also revealed that the journey to the sport of mixed martial arts, and his goal to make it to the UFC some day, began while he was in elementary school. While most kids his age dreamed of being an astronaut, or being in the NBA, Torres wanted to fight in the UFC.
“This is the most exciting opportunity I have,” Torres told MyMMANews.com. “I’ve been dreaming about this day since I was 10 years old writing about my career choices. I’m beyond excited. This is the biggest opportunity I’ve had in my life and I’m willing to make it the best opportunity I can.
“Ever since I was in the fourth grade and I found out about MMA as a sport, it’s always been a dream to go to the UFC. I always wanted to become the best fighter and I knew that the best were in the UFC. Ever since I had the goal to start MMA, I always had the goal to be with the best, and the best is with the UFC.”
Most kids his age, especially boys, want to shadow their dads and spend as much time with them as possible. Torres was able to enhance that bond with his father through the sport of MMA. That bond is what triggered this 12-year-plus dream.
“My father was big into MMA,” Torres explained. “He was a big fan of fighting and he actually started watching Pride, and watching Pride videos, and that lead to the UFC since they overruled Pride. Ever since I was young, I remember my dad staying up late watching the UFC events and, of course, I wanted to see what my dad was doing. My dad’s a cool dude and I definitely found out about MMA and the UFC through him.”
