Diego Lopes submits Gavin Tucker with beautiful triangle armbar early at UFC Nashville

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, August 5, 2023, for UFC Nashville, going down live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Headlining the event is a 140 lb catchweight bout between a pair of bantamweight contenders in no. 4 ranked Cory Sandhagen (16-4) and no. 7 ranked Rob Font (20-6).

Co-headlining the event was a strawweight match up between no. 5 ranked former divisional champion Jessica Andrade (24-11) and no. 10 ranked Tatiana Suarez (9-0).

Our first feature fight of the evening came in the featherweight division between Brazil’s Diego Lopes (22-6) and Canada’s Gavin Tucker (13-3). Lopes came into the bout off a defeat to no. 10 ranked Movsar Evloev (UD) in May, a fight he looked incredible in, while Tucker came in off a defeat to no. 13 ranked Dan Ige (KO) in March of 2021 and hadn’t fought since.

Continue reading to see how this 145 lb affair went down:

Official Result: Diego Lopes def. Gavin Tucker via submission (triangle armbar) at 1:38 of round one

Tucker shoots in on an early takedown about one minute into the bout and is immediately wrapped up by the legs of Lopes. Already it’s looking a lot like his debut outing against Evloev; he gave the 17-0 Russian contender all he could handle in that fight, nearly submitting him on a number of occasions.

Only BJJ black belt Gavin Tucker was unable to escape the triangle, and ultimately gives up the armbar as Lopes sweeps him into mount.

Diego Lopes once again demonstrates he has one of the most dangerous guards in the entire sport, picking up his 12th career submission victory and his 20th overall finish in 22 career wins.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
