Dustin Poirier stuns McGregor, evens score at UFC 257

Dustin Poirier settled the score by shocking Conor McGregor via a second-round TKO victory at UFC 257 on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Poirier stunned McGregor with a right hand and pressured McGregor until referee Herb Dean stepped in.

The first fighter to hold two UFC titles simultaneously is back to headline UFC 257 on Saturday, Jan. 23. 

“The Notorious” Conor McGregor is set to enter the octagon for the first time in over a year to rematch the former 155-pound interim champion Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi. The pair will serve as the main event on pay-per-view.

McGregor comes out of retirement once again to meet a familiar foe. McGregor defeated Poirer via first-round TKO at UFC 178 in August 2014. 

The 32-year-old most recently finished Donald Cerrone via a 40-second TKO at UFC 246 in January 2020. It came after he suffered a fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC UFC 229 in October 2018.

Poirier is fresh off a “Fight of the Year” nomination for his unanimous decision win against Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN 12 back in June. Poirier won six out of his last eight bouts.

His most recent defeat is a third-round submission loss to Nurmagomedov.

Round 1

McGregor in a hurry to get started. Referee Herb Dean stop him, McGregor backs up and the fight is one. Dustin Poirier lands the right hand. Both men trade slightly. Poirier scores an early takedown. McGregor gets to his feet and pins Poirier against the cage, while Poirier lands a shoulder strike and Poirier gives two of his own right back. Poirier reveres the position and presses McGregor against the cage, McGregor lands a knee to the body. Poirier in on a single leg, McGregor landing short shots as he defends. McGregor gets wrist control and puts Poirier against the cage. Both men talking to each other. The fighters break and McGregor lands an elbow as he backs up. Poirier easts a left hand.
