Eddie Alvarez vs Dustin Poirier 2

Nearly a year since they fought at UFC 211, fans finally will be able to see the rematch between Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier later this summer. According to multiple reports, Alvarez and Poirier have agreed to run it back against each other after their first fight ended in a no-contest. First reported by ESPN and later announced by MMA Fighting, Alvarez and Poirier will rematch in Calgary on July 28 for UFC on FOX 30.

The two have gone back-and-forth through the media for months and took the long road back to each other to finally get this rematch set. The bitterness between the two even lasted all the way until the day before the news of the rematch came out, as Poirier continued to call for Alvarez to sign the contract.

According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, it seems as if Poirier got a sweeter deal in his contract to make this fight happen.

UFC has sweetened Poirier’s deal, it would seem. Took a second, and it played with our emotions, but I think this fight just might happen! https://t.co/i2jHhFKK8y

Since their first fight ended in the unfortunate no-contest, both guys have taken their own respective path to the top of the lightweight division, which is jammed with great fighters at the top. Since UFC 211, Eddie Alvarez has a win over Justin Gaethje who he coached against on TUF 26 and won by third-round knockout. Meanwhile, Poirier has picked up victories over Anthony Pettis and also most recently, Gaethje.

Both guys sit at the top of their division but with so much uncertainly on champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s next opponent, a win for either guy will likely jump them up into the conversation for a title shot in the near future.
