Fabricio Werdum Signing With Bellator, Waiting on Fedor to Sign Contract
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Fabricio Werdum, has announced he intends to sign with Bellator. The one stipulation is for heavyweight legend, Fedor Emelianenko to sign his side of the contract to fight him.
Werdum said that he will sign with Bellator but the current goal is to fight Fedor first. While it is his preference, he will sign with Scott Coker and Bellator regardless.
Werdum served a 2 year USADA suspension after losing to Alexander Volkov in 2018. He returned earlier this year, losing to Alexey Oleinik. He then spoiled the heavyweight debut of Alexander Gustafsson in July, fighting out his contract.
Werdum said he planned on testing free agency. The former champion won his belt against Cain Velasquez before losing it in his first title defense against Stipe Miocic.
Werdum asked for release from his contract during his USADA suspension and was not granted.
Fabricio Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko
Werdum and Fedor have a history together. In 2010, the two fought in Strikeforce, with Fedor the heavy favorite. Werdum ended up upsetting Fedor in the first round with a triangle armbar.
Fedor is, of course, immortalized in the MMA world. Many argue he is the greatest heavyweight of all time. The sambist has been involved in the sport since 2000 and has beat some of the best names heavyweight has to offer. Those include Big Nog, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, Cro Cop, Mark Hunt, and Tim Sylvia.
Fedor fought in the heavyweight Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix beating Frank Mir and Chael Sonnen to get to the finals. He lost to Ryan Bader in the finals. He bounced back with a win over Rampage Jackson.
The two would be a legend versus legend bout that fans would absolutely tune in to for old times sake.
