Gilbert Burns says Kamaru Usman ‘knows I can submit him’ at UFC 258

Gilbert Burns is extremely confident Bruce Buffer will say “And New” after UFC 258.

In the main event of the pay-per-view card, Burns is set to fight his former training partner and friend in Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title. It’s a very intriguing matchup and one many fans are looking forward to given the fact they trained together for so many years. That led many pundits to believe one of them already knows who will on Saturday night and Burns hints that Usman knows he can’t go to the ground with him.

“I know I can submit him anywhere, anytime, in the bottom, in the top, anywhere,” Burns said at the UFC 258 media day. “He knows I can submit him. He might watch out for this because he knows. He said, ‘oh people know who’s going to win,’ but he knows too, he knows.”

Gilbert Burns is well-known for his jiu-jitsu and if Usman decides to wrestle, perhaps Burns can get ahold of a submission. Yet, this all could just be talk from the Brazilian, but the champ’s only loss in his career did come by submission which makes the comments by Burns even more interesting.

Burns enters this fight on a six-fight winning streak, including being 4-0 at welterweight on this run. The Brazilian is 5-0 at welterweight but is coming off the two biggest wins of his careers as he dominated Tyron Woodley over five rounds and knocked out Demian Maia in the first round.

Kamaru Usman, meanwhile, is undefeated in the UFC and coming off a decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251, the event Burns and Usman were supposed to meet. He also has a fifth-round TKO win over Colby Covington in his first title defense and dominated Tyron Woodley over five rounds to win the title. However, many believe this fight against Gilbert Burns will be his toughest title defense to date.
