Guram Kutateladze edges Gamrot in a questionable split decision

The long-awaited matchup between featherweights Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung headlines UFC on ESPN+ 38 tonight, Saturday, Oct. 17.

For the fourth-straight week, the Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi will serve as the home for the UFC. Former women’s flyweight title contender Katlyn Chookagian meets the former Charon Jessica Andrade in the co-main event.

In a lightweight matchup, Mateusz Gamrot takes on Guram Kutateladze. This bout has the fans ecstatic as both fighters are on their respective win streaks. Both fighters are also making their highly anticipated UFC debut. The 29-year-old Polish fighter, Gamrot enters this bout undefeated, with a perfect record of 17-0.

Round 1: Kutateladze leads the bout with a body kick. Gamrot fires back and takes the fight to the floor. Kutateladze begins utilizing rubber guard early but gives up on it. Both fighters lock legs working for a leg lock. Both both stand and are very active and heavy with their punches. Kutateladze fires another heavy body kick. Gamrot is pumping his jabs and switching stances often. He shoots for a takedown but Kutateladze sees it coming a mile away and avoids the shot. Both fighters land their respective combinations in bursts. Gamrot attempts another takedown and during a scramble, Kutateladze fires a kick to a grounded Gamrot that’s very close to landing illegally to Gamrots head. The referee gives a warning and the action continues. Kutateladze continues utilizing his heavy body kicks while Gamrot fires heavy hands to close the round.

Round 2: Gamrot attempts a head kick early with Kutateladze landing an overhand left that drops Gamrot briefly. Gamrot is quick to recover and get back on his feet and gets back to work on Kutateladze. Kutateladze gets flashy, firing an ax kick followed by a spinning wheel kick. Both narrowly missed but kept Gamrot on his toes. Gamrot shoots a take-down that is fended off and Katie picks up the pace with his striking. Both fighters are taking turns with throwing but neither fighter is landing anything significantly. With half of the round left, Gamrot shoots again which is easily fended it off. Kutateladze is beginning to pick up his strike output and landing more accurately until Gamrot catches a leg kick and drags Kutateladze to his back. Gamrot lands some damage on the ground but Kutateladze easily stands back up and continues the pressure on his opponent. With seconds left in the round, Gamrot gets Kutateladze to the floor briefly. As Kutateladze bounces to his feet, Gamrot lands a clean hook before the bell sounds.

Round 3: Both fighters are quick to engage in the center of the cage but Gamrot shoots quickly for the takedown. Kutateladze is able to put up a fight with Gamrot getting the position for a throw. Kutateladze gets back to his feet and both fighters resume in the center of the octagon. Gamrot lands several nice punch combinations while Kutateladze mixes it up between his leg kicks and punch attempts. Gamrot switches levels for another takedown and gets Kutateladze to the floor with ease. Kutateladze is able to use the cage to work his way to his feet and Gamrot lands some heavy hands on his way out. Both fighters go tit-for-tat in the center of the cage and at the one minute mark Gamrot secures another brief takedown. The fight gets back to the feet for several seconds before Gamrot scores points in the closing seconds with one more successful takedown followed by punches to close the round.
