Gillian Robertson takes down Poliana Botelho in comeback-decision win

Gillian Robertson resorted to ground control for a comeback -decision win against Poliana Botelho at UFC on ESPN+38 on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The long-awaited matchup between featherweights Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung headlines the event.

For the fourth-straight week, the Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi will serve as the home for the UFC. Former women’s flyweight title contender Katlyn Chookagian meets the former champion Jessica Andrade in the co-main event. 

Another women’s flyweight bout taking place earlier on the card is Gillian Robertson and Poliana Botelho.

A member of “The Ultimate Fighter” season 26, Robertson won three of her last four bouts. She most recently submitted Cortney Casey via third-round submission at UFC on ESPN 11 this past June. 

Botelha was also victorious in three of her last four octagon appearances. It’s been a year and a half since Botelho last stepped into the cage. She picked up a unanimous decision win against Lauren Mueller at UFC 236 in April 2019.

ROUND 1

Robertson immediately shoots for a takedown. Botelho is defending well, but Robertson is staying glued to the leg. Botelho is up to her feet and presses Robertson against the octagon. Robertson is looking for hand control, fighting for an under hook. Robertson able to create space and get free on her feet. Botelho is center with Robertson on the outside. Botelho lands a left kick to the body. Robertson throws the jab, but misses up top with a head kick. Robertson shoots in on the leg again. Botelho is defending as Robertson is holding the leg of Robertson. Botelho showing some balance here on one foot. Robertson gives up on the leg. Botelho having success with stuffing the takedown. Botelho lands a flying knee as Robertson shoots for another takedown. Robertson earns the takedown on her third attempt. Robertson is in Botelho’s half guard. Robertson is landing knees to the body.

Botelho comes out aggressive and backs up Robertson. Robertson shoots and scores another takedown. Robertson lands in the full guard of Botelho. Botelho is in the bottom, Robertson not being very active in the top position. Robertson lands two punches from full guard. Both girls are not being very busy on the mat. Robertson tries to pass the guard, moves to half guard. Robertson then moves to side control, looking for full mount. Robertson slides the knee over Botelho’s stomach and is in full mount. Robertson lands some ground and pound, but searching for an arm. Botelho being peppered with punches from Robertson. Botelho wraps arms around Robertson to prevent space for strikes. Robertson ends the round in full mount.

Robertson lands a leg kick early. Robertson shoots for a takedown, but Botelho sprawls and defends quickly. Botelho’s face is wearing some damage. Robertson sticks to the script and gets the takedown. Robertson is in Botelho’s half guard. Robertson using some short elbows from the top position. Robertson has complete control on the mat over Botelho. Robertson slides knee over the belly again and gets full mount. Botelho rises her hips in an attempt to shake Robertson off. Robertson damages Botelho with elbows. Robertson pour son some more strikes, dominating. Robertson remains in full mount and is landing strikes. Botelho is showing some grit. Botelho give sup her back as she bellies down. Robertson looking for a choke. No submission finish, but the round ends.Dominant performance for Robertson.
