Jun Yong Park sets middleweight record battering John Phillips

The long-awaited matchup between featherweights Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung headlines UFC on ESPN+ 38 tonight, Saturday, Oct. 17.

For the fourth-straight week, the Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi will serve as the home for the UFC. Former women’s flyweight title contender Katlyn Chookagian meets the former champion, Jessica Andrade, in the co-main event.

In a middleweight matchup, Jun Yong Park will take on John Phillips on the preliminary portion of the card.

Jung is 1-1 inside the UFC octagon. He’s coming off of a unanimous decision win over Marc-Andre Barriault at UFC on ESPN+ 23 and looking to keep the momentum rolling.

John Phillips comes into this bout desperately searching for a win. Phillips enters this bout with a UFC record of 4-1, Phillips started his UFC stint going 0-3 stint. He got a much needed 14 second knockout against Alen Amedovski. Only to get manhandled by Khazmat Chizmaev in his last outing.

Round 1: A slight feeling out process between both fighters with Phillips looks to load up early. Park faints a double jab and switches his levels for the takedown. Park attempt to land some ground and pound with Phillips scrambling into a north-south position. Park secured Phillip’s neck which is fended off. Park transitions to Phillips’ back where he threatens the rear-naked choke from multiple positions while peppering some punishment from the back. Park is controlling the fight with ease on the ground and continues peppering shots while riding Phillips’ back to secure the round.

Round 2: Both fighters feint some shots back-and-forth on the feet for the first 30 seconds of the round. Park switches levels for another takedown as Phillips fires a heavy uppercut that narrowly misses. Park controls the ground from half guard and landing hammer fists. Phillips makes several attempts to escape and is met by a submission attempt or a flurry of punches. Phillips explodes to get back to his feet and Park drags him back to the mat and picking up where he left off. Landing a plethora of right hooks over and under Phillips defense. Park continues mixing it up with hammerfists with the referee looking concerned, encouraging Phillips to pick up the pace.

Round 3: Phillips comes forward with looping hooks looking to take Parks head off. Potentially too little and too late as Park ducks under the strike attempts for yet, another takedown. Park gets back to work with his strikes, clearly looking for the finish. Phillips looks to better his position, but Park is relentless with his never-ending pressure. Park is consistently punching and neutralizing any advances Phillips makes on the ground. Park closes the bout on top, firing elbows from the top until the final bell sounds to end this one-sided affair.
