‘Industry re-defining’ announcement includes GSP, Bjorn Rebney, Tim Kennedy and more
An ‘industry re-defining’ announcement is scheduled to be released this coming Wednesday at 4 pm EST, as learned today during The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani who read a press release on the air from notable PR firm O’Malley Hansen Communications.
No further details were given as the information was embargoed until the media call.
We do know that former Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, and former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre are involved as well as fighters Cain Velasques, Tim Kennedy, T.J. Dillashaw, and Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, among others.
The above fighters are all represented by Creative Artists Agency, a long-held rival of the UFC’s new owners, WME-IMG and have been fairly vocal about the need for a Fighter’s Union and have been public advocates for collective bargaining.
Rebney has gone into near seclusion since being ousted by Viacom, the parent company of Bellator MMA. The once frequent tweeter all together fell off the face of the planet since his exit.
So what could this major announcement be?
Is it the start of a fighter’s union?
Or how about the start of a new mixed martial arts organization?
Could it be a boycott of sorts?
It will be an interesting 48 hours until Wednesday’s call as rumors and speculation begin to circulate.
Stay tuned for more.
