Jonathan Martinez batters and stops Cub Swanson: UFC Vegas 62

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, October 15, 2022, just one week out from UFC 280, for UFC Vegas 62, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a women’s flyweight contest between no. 5 ranked Alexa Grasso (14-3) and no. 6 ranked Viviane Araujo (11-3).

Our co-main of the evening came in the bantamweight division, as Cub Swanson (28-12) made the move down to 135 lbs for the first time to take on surging prospect Jonathan Martinez (16-4).

An interesting fact about these two fights: both Grasso and Martinez came in on three-fight win streaks, while both Swanson and Araujo came in having gone 3-1 over their last four contests.

Official Result: Jonathan Martinez def. Cub Swanson via TKO (leg kicks) at 4:19 of round two

Martinez looks for an early takedown but is unable to secure it, and Swanson takes him down immediately following.

Swanson passes right into side control, but is swept not long thereafter, and moments later they’re back to their feet.

Swanson is plotting his heavy hands, while Martinez is mixing it up with vicious round kicks to the body.

Martinez drops Swanson at the end of the first with a nasty knee and follows up with some punches to further hurt Swanson. Martinez drops Swanson again with a knee to the body at the very end of the round, and honestly, the fight could’ve been stopped here.

Swanson ends up getting dropped again in the first minute of the second.

After making his way up with about two minutes left, Swanson gets his boxing going and lands three really heavy shots.

But, Martinez is too dynamic, and he starts landing his inside leg kick. He lands three of them in total, all three of which drop Swanson, the third of which stops the fight. They were vicious.

Swanson showed up tonight, and he looked good considering, but the young lion defeats the old lion this time around. Jonathan Martinez has now won his last four-straight fights.

What’s next for him?

And, another interesting fact, this is the second fight tonight that ended at 4:19 of round two, as Tatsuro Taira finished CJ Vergara at that exact time with an armbar in our second preliminary bout of the night.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
