Joseph Duffy is a name not a lot of MMA fans know. The UFC lightweight is unranked and although won some fights in the UFC have yet to beat the big names in the division.
However, one person he does hold a win over is Conor McGregor. The two Irishmen fought in Cage Warriors in which Duffy submitted McGregor in just 38 seconds by arm triangle. Since the fight, the two went there opposite ways but with both in the UFC’s lightweight division, some fans have been asking for a McGregor vs Duffy 2. According to Duffy, that is a fight he doesn’t care to pursue all that much.
“There’s always going to be people throwing my name out there [because of our first fight]. For me, it’s just that far in the past…the option is always open,” Duffy told Eurobash. “If that happened, I would love it. Croke Park, it’s a dream for anyone; it’s like a Dublin vs. Donegal match for me. It would be a huge fight and I’m pretty sure we would sell out Croke Park no bother, but it’s not something I’m pursuing, I just want to do this my way and I suppose I’ve got to take one fight at a time.
“If that opportunity presents itself, of course, I’d love to have that fight again. Look what [McGregor] has gone on to do and obviously, I would love to prove that I could beat him again. I’m not going looking for [a rematch]; I’m just focusing on my own thing, I’m not going to be calling him out and all this craic, it’s just not me.”
Ultimately, Duffy holds a win over McGregor, in which not too many other fighters can say the same. Although a rematch would be a big payday for Duffy, he isn’t vocal about it because that isn’t who he is. For now, Duffy is focused on his upcoming fight against Marc Diakese at UFC London in March.
