Justin Tafa KO’s Austen Lane in 82 seconds of rematch at UFC 293

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, September 9, 2023, for UFC 293, going down live from the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Headlining the event is a title clash between UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya (24-2) and no. 5 ranked Sean Strickland (27-5).

Co-headlining the event is a heavyweight affair between no. 6 ranked Tai Tuivasa (14-5) and no. 7 ranked former Bellator & M-1 Global heavyweight champion Alexander Volkov (36-10).

The first feature fight of the evening also came in the heavyweight division, this one a rematch between knockout artists Justin Tafa (7-3, 1 NC) and Austen Lane (12-4, 1 NC). These two fought earlier this year in June, the bout resulting in a no contest just 29 seconds in due to an accidental eye poke suffered by Tafa; now we get to see them go at it again to declare who the better fighter is.

Of Tafa’s six professional wins coming in, all six came via knockout, while of Lane’s 12 wins coming in, 11 came via knockout with one submission.

Official Result: Justin Tafa def. Austen Lane via TKO (punches) at 1:22 of round one

Lane pokes Tafa in the eye 20 seconds into the bout and it appeared for a second, we were going to have some deja vu tonight. Tafa was able to continue however, and soon after landed a vicious overhand right.

Tafa found his range with this punch, as he continued to land heavy shots en route to his knockout stoppage victory.

Justin Tafa keeps his 100% finish rate tonight at UFC 293.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
