Kamaru Usman interested in Colby Covington trilogy fight to “send him to the shadow realm”
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman says he is interested in a Colby Covington trilogy fight to “send him to the shadow realm.”
Usman was a guest in attendance at Saturday’s UFC 272, which featured Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal in the main event. With both men each having two losses to Usman, The Nigerian Nightmare” was of course interested in seeing what happened in the fight. Ultimately, it ended up being a Covington win as he was able to smother Masvidal and win a decision. It’s a big win for Covington as he will remain locked in his No. 1 contender spot in the UFC welterweight division, which means he can’t be too far from Usman.
Even though Usman has already defeated Covington twice, a third fight would likely still do big pay-per-view numbers given the rivalry. Speaking in a Q+A session ahead of UFC 272 with the fans and media, Usman said that Covington would be interesting as a future opponent just because he is still running his mouth. With Covington taking care of business against Masvidal, this fight is now very possible.
“I’m just being honest with you guys, I’ve said earlier, like Covington’s mouth is still a little too big. So until I send him to the shadow realm, that’s one that I would ultimately still want. The sound of my fist through his face, yeah that feels good,” Usman said.
Usman will likely take on Leon Edwards in his next fight, though Usman also has a previous win over Edwards as well. If Usman beats Edwards, there won’t be too many fresh title contenders. At that point, you would be looking at prospects like Khamzat Chimaev, Sean Brady, and Shavkat Rakhmonov as potential contenders. That’s why Usman is likely more interested in Covington, and Covington is of course interested in the third Usman fight as well.
