Katlyn Chookagian is at her best

After holding three events in the span of eight days in Jacksonville, Florida, the UFC returns to Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC on ESPN 9 tonight, Saturday, May 30.

Taking place at the UFC Apex, the event is headlined by former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns. In the co-main event, Blagoy Ivanov takes on Augusto Sakai in a heavyweight clash.

The preliminary card headliner features a women’s flyweight bout between Katlyn Chookagian and Antonina Shevchenko. Chookagian is fighting the Shevchenko sisters back-to-back, following a third-round submission loss to champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247 on Feb. 8.

Chookagian earned the title bout with two-straight victories over Jennifer Maia and Joanne Calderwood.

The older sister to Valentina, Antonina is 2-1 inside the octagon. She most recently defeated Lucie Pudilova by a second-round submission at UFC on ESPN 5 in August 2019.

Her  only professional defeat is a split decision loss to Roxanne Modaferri at UFC oN ESPN+ 7 in April 2019.

ROUND 1

Both women tap gloves and meet each other with leg kicks. Shevchenko works the jab and Chookagian misses on counter. Shevcheno kicks the body, but Chookagian catches the leg and gets a takedown. Chookagian jumps on the back and puts in a rear-naked choke. Shevchenko escapes and Chookagian quickly sinks the arm under again. Shevchenko is defending, not giving in. Chookagian works some ground and pound and sinks the arm in again. Shevchenko turns her body and eats a lot of ground and pound. Chookagian pours it on. Chookagian keeps pressure with ground and pound. Shevchenko gets to her feet and the round ends shortly after.

ROUND 2

Chookagian brings the pressure and put Shevchenko against the cage. Chookagian able to drag Shevchenko down. Chookagian transitions to full mount. Shevchenko tries to keep Chookagian tight, unable to throw big strikes. Chookagian active with a right hand. Shevchenko rolls out and Shevchenko takes the back. Chookagian pours on the ground and pound. Shevchenko turns again and Chookagian transitions back to full mount. Chookagian rains down heavy strikes, including a right elbow. Shevchenko is eating a lot of shots. Chookagian ends round on top, finishing with some shorts shots to the body

The two meet in the center. The two are on their feet for the longest time in the entire fight. Chookagian gets better of the exchanges. Shevchenko greets Chookagian with the jab. Chookagian keeps working the jab. Shevchenko with an axe kick, misses. Shevchenko landing more. Chookagian lands a stiff jab that stops Shevchenko momentarily. Chookagian gets a hold of Shevchenko and works for a takedown. Shevchenko turns out and both women are in the center. Chookagian lands a kick to body and Shevchenko counters with a jab. Shevchenko works for jab, but Chookagian ducks under and gets a takedown. Chookagian finishes the round with ground and pound.
