LFA 110 results: Charles Johnson vs. Yuma Horiuchi

Charles Johnson became the new interim LFA flyweight title holder in a back-and-forth split decision win against Yuma Horiuchi at LFA 110 on Friday, July 2.

Johnson rebounded from a lopsided first round to take the title. It marks two-straight victories for the newly crowned champion.

A pair of top flyweights outside of the UFC will meet for the Legacy Fighting Alliance Interim Flyweight Championship in the LFA 110 headliner on Friday, July 2.

Professional boxer and mixed martial artist, Charles Johnson takes on Japan’s Yuma Horiuchi at the Grand Hotel Casino and Resort in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Serving as the co-main event is a middleweight affair between the unbeaten Chibwikem Onyenegecha  and Renato Valente. Christina Natividad, the younger brother. of UFC bantamweight, Kevin Natividad, meets Luis Aguirre in a flyweight matchup.

Women strawwieghts Jaqueline Amorim and Megan Owen put their unblemished records on the line as well. Kicking off the night are two flyweights making their professional debut as Arpan Gurung takes on Oscar Herrera.

During a night where three of five bouts feature flyweights, Johnson looks to make a statement 125-pound division with a title victory. The 30-year-old is coming off a first-round anaconda choke against Karlee Pengilinan at LFA 100 last February.

Horiuchi is making his third appearance inside the lFA cage after tapping Donavon Frelow with a second-round arm-bar at LFA 104 in April. In his LFA debut, the 23-year-old suffered a split-decision loss to Leandro Gomes at LFA 81 in January 2021.

Onyenegecha makes his first appearance since July 2018. The Forge MMA product earned a split decision win against Anthony Adams on Dana White’s Contender Series, but left without a contract. He is perfect in his professional career with six of his seven wins coming by TKO/knockout.

Valente is 3-3 in his last six fights. He most recently dropped a unanimous decision nod to Mark martin at LFA 105 back in April.

Natividad enters his fourth LFA bout unbeaten at 3-0. In his most recent bout, “the Hawaiian Punch” picked up a unanimous decision win against  Evan Woolsey at LFA 100.

Aguire recently ended a two-fight skid by submitting Erick Olea in the second round at EXF 15 in May.

LFA 110 recap:

Apran Gurung [Pro debut] vs. Oscar Herrera [Pro debut]

Oscar Herrera slapped on a slick arm-bar to put away Apran Gurung in round two.

Herrera establishes a presence on the outside, very effective with his strikes. Gurung pushes the pace, but Herrera lands often. A close first round.

Gurung is the aggressor early on, coming forward. Herrera scores the first takedown of the fight.

Herrera controls from the top position. Herrera slaps on the arm-bar and there’s the tap.

Herrera wins his debut, while Gurung starts his career at 0-1.

 

Jaqueline Amorim [3-0] vs. Megan Owen [1-0]

Jaqueline Amorim needed 10 seconds to finish Megan Owen in round one.

Amorim lands a right hook that puts Owen immediately to her butt. Amorim swarms Owen and hammer fist her way to the knockout victory.

Amorim remains unbeaten at 4-0, while Owen falls to even at 1-1.

Christian Natividad [3-0] vs. Luis Aguirre [3-2]

Christian Natividad dominated Luis Aguirre, earning a unanimous decision win in his flyweight debut.

Both men trade early. Natividad gets a finger in the eye of Aguirre. Referee warns Natividad, Aguirre recovered, fight resumed.

Aguirre goes down from a right hand by Natividad. Aguirre goes for an ankle lock, but Natividad escapes. Aguirre is bleeding from his left eye.

Natividad landed the more significant strikes in round one.

Just 17 seconds into round two, the referee calls a brief stoppage to wipe down the canvas. Aguirre taking some punishment on the feet, still bleeding. Aguirre shoots for a takedown, but Natividad easily defends.

After some time on their feet, Aguirre loses his balance. Natividad capitalizes and moves to Aguirre’s guard. Aguirre needs a finish in round three.

Aguirre is swinging in round three. Natividad is bleeding from his nose. Aguirre’s face shows the damage, swelling, bleeding.

Aguirre goes back after getting tagged with a right, Natividad goes for a flying knee, but misses.

Natividad scores a late takedown. The fight ends with Nativdad in the top position.

Natividad improves to a perfect 4-0, while Aguirre drops to 3-3.

Chibwikem Oyenegecha [7-0] vs. Renato Valente [7-4]

A late knockdown in the third round helped Renato Valente earn a split decision win against Chibwikem Oyenegecha

Oyenegecha gets poked in the right eye early, referee misses it. Valente lands a head kick.

Oyenegecha gets tagged with a right hand. Anything on the right side is landing.

Valenete goes for a flying knee, swarms. Valenete is on top, dropping bombs.

Oyenegecha gives up full mount. Oyenegecha able to get to his feet. Valente still throwing with power.

Dominant first round for Valente.

Oyenegecha is active with his kicks early in round two. A much closer round this time around.

Oyenegecha’s right eye has been opened this entire round, can actually see. Tight round, I give the edge to Oyenegecha.

Oyenegecha is going to the leg kicks again at the start of the third. A much higher striking volume from Oyenegecha.

Both men trade low kicks. Valente catches Oyenegecha with a right hand, he goes down.

Oyenegecha gets back to his feet. Both men finish the fight on their feet.

Valente improves to 8-4 and Oyenegecha suffers his first professional loss, drops to 7-1.

Charles Johnson [8-2] vs. Yuma Horiuchi [8-3]

Charles Johnson found his range in a split decision win against Yuma Horiuchi, becoming the new LFA interim flyweight champion.

Horiuchi establishes the calf kicks early. Horiuchi piling on the leg kicks.

Johnson is trash talking in Japanese. Johnson catches Horiuchi with a right hand. Both men throwing to end the round. Close first round, I give it to Horiuchi.

Horiuchi mixing in the high kicks in round two. Horiuchi lands a front kick to the cup late. Referee takes away a point from Horiuchi immediately. Johnson has a small cut under his right eye.

Horiuchi was more active, but lost a point in round two.

Both men with low kicks early. Horiuchi looks for takedown, but quickly gives up on it.

Horiuchi throws front kick, getting very close tot he cup again. Both men trading in exchanges.

Horiuchi’s left eye is closing. Johnson trips, but gets to his feet quick.

Horiuchi letting his hands go a bit. Johnson finding a home for his right hand. Solid round for Johnson, very active for both.

Horiuchi is still controlling the pace in the fourth. Johnson is covering up and Horiuchi is scoring with jabs and straight punches.

Johnson signals to the referee about an eye poke. Horiuchi’s left hand poked  Johnson in his right eye. The doctor comes in to check the eye.

Doctor says Johnson is good to go. They are back to it.

They are trading often, showcasing their durability. Johnson gets double under hooks. Horiuchi gets out.

Johnson gaining momentum, turning it on. Strong finish for Johnson. Horiuchi is bleeding from his nose.

Horiuchi lands some brutal body shots early in round five. Every time Johnson throws, Horiuchi answers. Horiuchi’s right eye is closing.

Johnson slips. Both men’s front legs are red. Johnson is switching stances, landing nicely. Horiuchi’s face is showing much more damage than Johnson.

Both men going for it, keeping up a high pace.

Johnson becomes the new interim flyweight champion, improves to 9-2. Horiuchi falls to 8-4.
