Marcus McGhee discusses his first career UFC win
Marcus McGhee didn’t have a fight lined up ahead of UFC Vegas 72, but he was feeling good in the gym and was telling his teammates that he wished he had fight.
A few hours after making that comment, not only did he have a fight, but he was headed to the UFC.
On just fours days notice, McGhee accepted a fight with Journey Newson at UFC Vegas 72 and he started packing up somethings to head to Las Vegas for his first career UFC fight.
Fight week was different for McGhee as he had to do the full fight week schedule within a few hours on Thursday morning and afternoon.
Thursday may have been busy, but McGhee enjoyed the process and he was so excited to make his debut.
After making weight on Friday, all that was left for McGhee was to fight on Saturday and he made the best of his short noticed opportunity.
In the opening round of his UFC Vegas 72 fight, McGhee set the pace by coming out fast and pressuring Newson.
He looked great in the opening round, but the UFC broadcast team was wondering if he’d tired after the pace of the first round. The answer was yes he could.
Two minutes into the second round, the fight was over.
McGhee landed a straight left hand that landed cleanly and smoothly. In fact, McGhee said it landed so clean that he didn’t even fill it land because it was so natural.
As Newson landed on the canvas, McGhee went in for the finish and Newson tried to roll to his hands and knee’s and when he did, McGhee took his back and locked in the rear naked choke.
Newson would tape to the choke and from there the celebration was on.
McGhee was so happy that he got the win and he was so thankful for the opportunity and he made sure to thank all of the UFC officials and staff for everything they did to make his first UFC win such a memorable experience.
As McGhee left the arena to eat pizza and ice cream, he soon learned that he earned an extra 50 thousand dollars as a result of a performance of the night bonus.
Following the win, McGhee spoke with MyMMANews to discuss his first career win, his team at the MMA Lab, being a semi-professional skateboarder and being a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
