Matchmaker Monday following UFC Vegas 30
UFC Vegas 30 was headed by two of the top heavyweights in the world.
Ciryl Gane remained undefeated and now he is now longer an up and coming contender as he’s now 9-0 and has victories former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, Jairzinho Rozenstruik and now Alexander Volkov.
Meanwhile, Volkov missed out again on an opportunity to get into title contention as he’s now 0-3 against the top of the division.
Let’s find out what’s next for both of Saturday’s main event fighters on this edition of Matchmaker Monday.
Ciryl Gane
Result: defeated Alexander Volkov by unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 30
Next: Derrick Lewis at UFC 265 on Aug. 7
Gane is now a contender and he’s now getting a shot at a UFC title.
Earlier today, UFC president Dana White told ESPN that Gane and Lewis are both deserving of a title shot and that the promotion is booking the two for an interim title bout on Aug. 7 at UFC 265.
The UFC tried to book Ngannou and Lewis in June and then again for August, but Ngannou won’t be ready to fight. So now Lewis and Gane will have the chance to get a UFC belt and earn a shot at the undisputed title.
Alexander Volkov
Result: lost to Ciryl Gane by unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 30
Next: Jairzinho Rozenstruik
Volkov lost another opportunity. Right now he’s 0-3 against the top of the division as he has losses to Lewis, Blaydes and now Gane.
For his next fight, he’s going to get someone ranked behind him, but luckily it won’t be against someone ranked too far behind him.
Right now Volkov and Rozenstruik are ranked at No. 5 and No. 6 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings. Both men are in similar spots as Rozenstruik lost two big nights to Ngannou and Gane.
The winner of Volkov and Rozenstruik would get another crack at the top of the division.
