Matchmaker Monday following UFC Vegas 9
Alistair Overeem continues to get it done. His win over Augusto Sakai at UFC Vegas 9 gives him wins in four of his past five fights.
As for Sakai, it’s his first loss in his UFC career.
Let’s find out what’s next for these men on this Matchmaker Monday.
Alistair Overeem
Result: defeated Augusto Sakai by fifth-round TKO at UFC Vegas 9
Next: rematch against Jairzinho Rozenstruik
Welcome to the log jam that is the heavyweight division.
So the top is pretty much filled up with Stipe Miocic, Francis Ngannou, Jon Jones and now all of sudden people are throwing around Brock Lesnar’s name.
Aside from those four names, Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis appear to be on a collision course for one another.
So that leaves Overeem and Rozenstruik as the only guys within the top five without names attached to them so I’m going with that as a future matchup.
These two fought in December and Overeem was on his way to a win before Rozenstruik landed a huge shot that knocked out Overeem with just four seconds left in the fight.
Augusto Sakai
Result: lost to Alistair Overeem by fifth-round TKO at UFC Vegas 9
Next: Junior Dos Santos
Sakai definitely has an upside and this was his first time moving up in competition and even though it didn’t go his way, he still showed that he has the skills to get towards the top one day.
Up next I see a matchup with Junior Dos Santos.
Personally, I think JDS should consider retirement, but if he fights again this matchup makes sense. Both are coming off losses to top five opponents and both are close by in the rankings.
If JDS does hang it up, you can matchup Alexander Volkov for the same reasons I mentioned above.
