Maycee Barber and Andrea Lee put on back-and-forth battle, Barber extends win streak at UFC on ESPN 43

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 25, 2023, for UFC on ESPN 43, going down live from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Headlining the event is a bantamweight showdown between a pair of dangerous finishers in no. 3 ranked Marlon Vera (20-7-1) and no. 5 ranked Cory Sandhagen (15-4).

Co-headlining is also a bantamweight clash, this one coming between former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm (14-6) and former Invicta FC bantamweight champion Yana Santos (14-6, 1 NC).

Our third fight that went down on the main card tonight came at 125 lbs between former LFA flyweight champion Andrea Lee (13-7) and 24 year old superstar Maycee Barber (12-2).

Lee came in having gone 2-1 over her latest three appearances, while Barber came in having won her last three-straight following the first and second defeats of her young career.

Official Result: Maycee Barber def. Andrea Lee via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Barber is looking good on the feet early on, until Lee secures a beautiful body lock trip takedown on her. Lee passes to side control, but Barber wraps Lee’s arm up with her legs and lands some nice elbows from bottom position.

Lee then spins to take Barber’s back, but quickly loses the position and they’re back to their feet.

The striking was relatively even through the first five minutes.

Barber secures a perfectly timed takedown momentarily in the second, though Lee doesn’t accept the position and gets right back to her feet. Barber catches her with a nice right hand not long thereafter that backed Lee up, and she continues to land some good combinations immediately following.

However, Barber gets too overeager and Lee times it well with a takedown of her own, ending the round in top position.

Barber secures another beautifully timed takedown a couple minutes into the third, though Lee is right back to her feet and then secures a single leg. Barber stands right back up as well, though she’s taken down again with a minute left on the clock and ends the fight on her back.

This was a very entertaining, back-and-forth clash between these two.

Though Lee secured all five of her takedown attempts and had a lot of top control, it wasn’t quite enough to snap Barber’s win streak and get a win here tonight at UFC on ESPN 43.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
