Today is a sad day in the world or professional wrestling as fans learned of the passing of two stars in the the sport entertainment industry.  WWE Hall of Famer, Nikolai Volkov, 70, and Brian Christopher, 46, were both pronounced dead July 29, 2018.

Volkov, who real name was Josip Nikolai Peruzović, was a heel or bad guy, who played the role of the Soviet during the height of the Cold War.  His battles with Hulk Hogan played the American vs Russian angle perfectly during the era. Although his character was often portrayed as a villainous Russian, Peruzović actually originates from Croatia and had a mixed background.   He and the Iron Sheik won a tag match during the first ever WrestleMania in 1985.  He later formed a tagteam with Boris Zukhov. The two Soviets were called The Bolsheviks.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, he switched to supporting the United States and teamed up with American wrestler “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Volkoff was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2005.

“Volkoff will go down in history as one of the greatest villains of all time,” the WWE said on their website.

A second wrestler, Brian Christopher Lawler, son of the famed Jerry “The King” Lawler died from injuries sustained in an attempted suicide while in jail. Lawler was arrested earlier this month for DUI after leading cops on a chase. According to a report from TMZ, police officers said he reeked of booze and had an open 12 ounce can in his center console, and they arrested him on the spot. Bail had been set at $40k.

The 46-year-old was found in his cell by guards and taken to a hospital where he was placed on life support. He was pronounced dead several hours later. He wrestled under the name “Grandmaster Sexay” alongside tagteam partner Scotty 2 Hotty and together they formed the team “Too Sexy”.
