Phil Hawes previews his upcoming fight against Deron Winn

Phil Hawes has been impressive to watch over the last few years.

Since 2019, Hawes has racked up a 7-0 record. Those seven victories include a win in Bellator, a win on Dana White’s Contender Series in which Hawes earned a UFC contract and of course three wins in the sports biggest promotion.

While things have been great over the past few years, that wasn’t always the case.

In 2017, Hawes was coming off his first career loss and entering what was the biggest fight of his life at the time on his first appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series. Unlike his great 2020 appearance on the show, Hawes was knocked out by Julian Marquez and found himself on the losing end of back-to-back fights.

Following the toughest part of his MMA career, Hawes made the decision to take two years off from the sport and train in Thailand. During his time in Thailand, Hawes focused on his stand up and he believes that time has made him a compete fighter.

Now training out of Sandford MMA in South Florida, Hawes believes he’s just getting started in career and he’s ready to put on the best performance of his career when he takes on Deron Winn at UFC Vegas 39 on Oct. 9.

Prior to the fight, Hawes spoke to MyMMANews about his upcoming fight, training at Sanford MMA and his two-year layoff from the sport in Thailand.

You can watch his full interview in the video above.
