Robert Whittaker impressed by Darren Till’s middleweight debut and knows he will only get better

Darren Till moved up to middleweight in the co-main event of UFC 244 when he took on Kelvin Gastelum. Many thought it was a risky fight for the Englishman.

Yet, in the end, Till fought a very smart fight and edged out a split-decision win over Gastelum. For former UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker, he was very impressed with Till’s performance.

“Till was landing a lot of clean shots,” Whittaker said on Grange TV (via BJPENN.com). “I think that he was nullifying a lot of Gastelum’s striking, because he was stepping out on the jab, dropping his level on the two. And, then turning it into the clinch. I think it was beautiful. I think Till came in with a great gameplan, I think he executed it perfectly, cause Gastelum is a super underrated, super, super dangerous fighter.”

There is no question Darren Till is a dangerous fighter as Robert Whittaker says. He knows the Englishman was dangerous and one of the top fighters at welterweight. The former champ expects him to do just as well at 185-pounds and will only get better as he fills into his new weight.

“He looks as good as he was in welterweight,” Whittaker said.

“Probably better,” Whittaker added when asked how Till will do at middleweight compared to welterweight. “He won’t be doing those harsh cuts anymore. And remember, this was his first fight at middleweight. He’s only going to fill out into it better.”

Many believe a fight between Darren Till and Robert Whittaker makes sense for both fighters. It would no doubt be an interesting bout between the two as the Aussie is looking to get back into the win column after losing the belt to Israel Adesanya by TKO at UFC 243. Till, meanwhile, returned to the win column against Gastelum after back-to-back finishes at 170-pounds.
