Sage Northcutt calls out Shinya Aoki, gets Amir Khan instead
It’s been a minute since mixed martial arts fans have seen Sage Northcutt compete in the ONE Championship circle.
Since leaving the UFC in 2018, Northcutt has just one fight under his belt, and it lasted a mere 29-seconds. In his ONE Championship debut in May 2019, Northcutt was knocked out by Cosmo Alexandre.
Northcutt then stated that he was going to drop down to lightweight, and a bout was scheduled against Shinya Aoki for April 2021. The contest did not come to fruition as Northcutt had to withdraw due to COVID-19.
The 26-year-old American recently posted on Twitter: “Hey Shinya @a_ok_i , I was told you were going to be my opponent on One championship’s July or August card if you didn’t get injured in your grappling match. Why won’t you fight me on the July or August Amazon Card.. What’s the problem?”

That’s when another ONE competitor, Amir Khan, decided to chime in and see if he could set up a fight of his own.
“I’m available on these dates if you don’t get a fight with
@a_ok_i
….. 😀
@ONEChampionship”
And from there, Northcutt graciously accepted that challenge and welcomed the opportunity to test himself against Khan.
Let’s do it! The @ONEChampionship August debut Amazon @PrimeVideo card sounds good! This will be an exciting fight for the fans and it would be a pleasure to fight you 👊🏼 https://t.co/ZKnOSYh6lW
